Suitcases, grocery bags, backpacks, fanny packs, coin purses, and potato sacks embody rituals of everyday use and lifestyle evidenced by the goods contained inside and the context in which these bags function. The plaid plastic bag is a particularly democratic carrier that can be found in many rural and urban settings around the world, connecting people through the routine of daily life.

The works American Tourister and Negotiating Function are an ongoing investigation motivated by my observations of these bags use in transporting handmade souvenirs for exchange at the trailhead to Machu Picchu, bootleg designer purses on Canal Street in Manhattan, and local produce on its way to market in Montego Bay.
